AP lists early research, document summaries, transcription, translation, headline suggestions, grammar and search optimization among permitted uses. Output must be reviewed and edited by journalists. AI does not replace reporting, sourcing, verification or editorial judgment.
Images receive a stricter boundary
AP continues to prohibit generative AI from creating, altering or enhancing news photography. That protects the evidentiary role of documentary images. When manipulated or AI-generated material is itself newsworthy, the standards require identification and context rather than presenting it as ordinary photography.
Disclosure depends on material impact
The guidance adds disclosure when generative AI plays a material role in published work. This is more useful than attaching the same vague label to everything: readers need to know what the system did, what a person checked and who is accountable for corrections.
